Moorgate Hospital

Francis Burton, born in 1906 in Rotherham, is my second cousin, twice removed and son of Francis Burton and Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman.

In 1933, Francis married Marjorie Brothwell.

Mr. Francis Burton, of 48, Toll Bar, Road, Brecks, died recently at Moorgate General Hospital, Rotherham. He was 67, was born at Rotherham, and had lived at the Brecks for 36 years.

Mr. Burton was employed by the Park Gate Iron and Steel Co. Ltd, for 39 years in the open hearth department, and he was a sample passer when he retired two years ago.

In his younger days, he played football for the Hare and Hounds, and cricket for Greasbro’, Brecks, Scholes, and inter-keen supporter of Rotherham United.

Mr. Burton leaves a widow.

Cremation took place at Rotherham on Monday, a service being conducted by his nephew, the Rev. Paul D. Brothwell. The mourners were Mrs. M. Burton (widow), Mr. and Mrs. L. A MASBRO’ WEDDING.

BURTON – BROTHWELL.

The marriage took place in St. Paul’s Church, Masbro’, on Saturday, of Miss Marjorie Brothwell, only daughter of Mr. J. H. Brothwell, of Masbro’, Rotherham, to Mr. Francis Burton; eldest son of Mr. Francis Burton, of Wellgate, Rotherham. The ceremony, which was choral, was conducted by the Rev. A. Puddicombe (Vicar).

The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an ankle-length gown of ivory satin and lace cat on Medieval lines. Her veil (lent by Mrs. F. Marsland) was fastened to her hair with a coronet of orange blossom, and was embroidered with lovers’ knots in each corner. She carried a bouquet of pale pink roses and lilies of the valley.

Miss Edith Burton (sister of the bridegroom) and Miss Barbara Simmons, the bridesmaids, had ankle-length dresses of floral georgette, and wore white picture hats. Their bouquets were of multi-coloured sweet peas and fern. The dame of honour was Mrs. W. G. Drew. The best man was Mr. Leonard Burton (brother of the bridegroom), and the groomsmen were Mr. Leslie Brothwell (brother of the bride) and Mr. Leonard Jervis (cousin of the bridegroom).

A reception was held by the bride’s parents in the Cross keys Hotel, Moorgate. The bride’s mother wore a dress of brown georgette and lace, and the bridegroom’s mother chose a gown of black crepe-de-chine. The former had a spray of pink sweet peas and the latter carried pink carnations.

The honeymoon is being spent at Scarbro’, whence the bride travelled in a fawn coat over a lemon and brown frock with fawn hat and skin shoes.

To the bride the bridegroom gave a dressing gown and hand bag, while to the bridesmaids he gave crystal necklaces. The bride’s gift to the bridegroom was a dressing gown. The wedding gifts included a library cabinet from the staff of Messrs. Darwins, Ltd., where the bride has been employed for the past eight years.

Francis Burton, born in 1881 in Rotherham, is my first cousin, thrice removed and son of Thomas Burton and Sarah Milsom.

In 1906, in All Saints’ Church, Rotherham, Francis married Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman. Together, Francis and Sarah issued four children, who were called, Francis (1906 to 1970), Leonard Ernest (1908 to 1994), Edith (1911 to 2002) and Elizabeth (1915 to 2002).

I found Francis and Sarah’s grave in 2005 in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham. It had been well cared for (presumably by their daughters until their deaths) but is now quite rapidly, and literally, falling apart.

BURTON. – On Sunday, February 18th, 1951, Francis (Skater) Burton, beloved husband of Sarah Ann, of 63, Wellgate, passed away, aged 69 years. Interred, Moorgate Cemetery, Wednesday, February 21st.

Rest after weariness.

Francis & Sarah’s grave

The death occurred last Sunday of Mr. Francis (“Skater”) Burton, of 63, Wellgate, Rotherham. He was 69.

A native of Rotherham, Mr. Burton was employed as a miner for about 30 years at the Rotherham Main Colliery, and then at the Rotherham Gas Works for about 13 years.

BURTON. – At Moorgate General Hospital, Sarah Ann, dearly loved wife of the late Francis and a loving mother and grandma, and sister of Laura, passes peacefully away May 19th, aged 75 years. Interment Moorgate, 2 p.m., Saturday.

Leonard Ernest Burton, born in 1908 in Rotherham, is my second cousin, twice removed and son of Francis Burton and Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman.

In 1934, Leonard married Dorothy Ivy Hudson and together, they issued two children, called, Alan and Peter.

MRS. D. I. BURTON

Mrs. Dorothy Ivy Burton, of 71, Watson Road, Kimberworth, Rotherham, died at the Moorgate General Hospital recently, aged 49.

Born in Rotherham, Mrs. Burton was employed as a meter tester by Messrs. Guest and Chrimes Ltd., for several years. She was a regular member of the congregation at St. John’s Church, Kimberworth Park.

Mrs. Burton leaves a widower and one son. Her husband, Mr. L. E. Burton, is employed as a bar mill foreman by Steel, Peech and Tozer.

A funeral service followed by interment took place at St. Thomas’ Church, Kimberworth, last Saturday, the Rev. B. W. Newth officiating. The mourners included Mr. L. E. Burton (widower), Mr. P.
