Thomas Henry Surtees & Fanny Todd

Thomas Henry Surtees, born in 1890 in Rotherham, is my second cousin, thrice removed and son of Frederick Surtees and Elizabeth Ann Cokeley.

In 1918, in All Saints’ Church, Rotherham, Thomas married Fanny Todd and together they issued four children, called, Ada, Hilda, Thomas Henry and Ronald.

It is interesting to note that Fanny’s sister, Harriet, married my first cousin, thrice removed, Ernest Burton.

MRS. F. SURTEES

The death occurred at the Moorgate General Hospital last Saturday of Mrs. Fanny Surtees, of 22, Burns Drive, Rotherham.

Mrs. Surtees who was 69, leaves a widower, two sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren. Her husband, Mr. T. H. Surtees, was employed by Brown, Bayley and Co. Ltd,. as a labourer until his retirement in 1957.

Cremation took place at Rotherham on Wednesday. The mourners were Mr. Surtees (widower), Mr. and Mrs. T. Surtees, Mr. “Ron” Surtees (sons and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. F. Evans, Mr. and Mrs. T. Heald (sons-in-law and daughters), Brenda and Margaret Heald, Roy and Derek Evans (grandchildren), Mrs. H Burton (sister), Mr. F. Surtees, Mr. and Mrs. E. Surtees, Mrs. A. Parry (brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law), Mrs. D. Hird, Mrs. A. Steven, Rene (nieces) and Mr. and Mrs. J. South (friends).

Joseph Burton

Thomas Burton, born in 1908 in Rotherham, is my first cousin, twice removed and son of Joseph Henry Burton and Mary Unwin. In 1930, in Rotherham, Thomas married Dorothy Nichols. Together, Thomas and Dorothy issued six children and the newspaper article below pertains to the death of one of their sons who was subsequently buried in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham.

THE ADVERTISER, SATURDAY, JULY 2nd, 1938.

TWO-YEAR-OLD BOY’S FATAL SCALDS.

MAY HAVE PULLED GAS RING TUBING.

A verdict of accidental death was returned by the Deputy Borough Coroner (Dr. F. C. Collinson, J.P.), at an inquest on Tuesday on Joseph Burton, the two-year-old son of Thomas Burton, unemployed steelworker, of 42, Browning Road, Rotherham. The child died in the Rotherham Hospital on Sunday as a result of scalds sustained at home on the previous day.

Dr. G. A. Baker, of the Rotherham Hospital, said the child was admitted on Sunday suffering from scalds to the right arm, forearm, right thigh and part of the abdomen on the right side. The child died on Sunday from shock.

Thomas Burton said that on Saturday he placed a saucepan of water on the gas ring in order to make some tea. After lighting the gas he went out of the kitchen into the living room to prepare a meal. The little boy had just gone into the kitchen when witness heard a scream. Rushing into the kitchen he found the boy shaking himself and screaming. He had pulled the saucepan over and the water had spilled.

Witness thought the child must have got hold of the gas tubing and pulled it.

William Thomas Bowler Crossland

William Thomas Bowler Crossland is my first cousin, thrice removed and son of William Bowler Crossland and Elizabeth Burton.

In 1879, in Rotherham, William married Annie Twibell and, together, they issued five children, four of which had died by 1905. Annie passed away in 1905 and on Christmas Day, 1907, in All Saints’ Church, Rotherham, William married Sarah Ann Seddon.

FUNERAL OF NATIONAL RESERVIST AT ROTHERHAM.

The funeral of the late Mr. W. T. B. Crossland took place on Sunday, at the Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham, in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. The mourners included Mrs. Crossland (widow), Miss Ada Crossland (daughter), Mr. Fred Seddon (stepson), Mr. and Mrs. George Crossland (Sheffield), Mr. and Mrs. F. Jarvis (brothers and sisters in law), Messrs. F. and G. Jarvis (nephews), Mrs. Barron, Mrs. Edwards and Miss E. Jarvis (nieces), Mrs. Whittaker and Mrs. Jolliffe (cousins), Mrs. Douglas and Mrs. Dale (sisters-in-law), Mr. Albert Dale (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. John Simpson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Cundey (Doncaster), Mr. and Mrs. H. Everett, Mr. E. Everett, Mr. F. Wigglesworth, Mrs. Fellows, and Mrs. Wildsmith. The bearers (Messrs. T. Froggatt, R. Wilson, T. Smith, W. Hague, P. Bisby, and W. Dixon), were employees at Messrs. W. Heaton and Co., Brass Works, Masbro’, by whom the deceased had been employed for many years. The staff of the Rotherham Theatre Royal also attended to pay a last tribute of respect to a colleague. Mr. Crossland having completed forty years’ service on the stage staff of the Theatre.

There was a large muster of National Reserves, under the command of Colours-sergeant Frith; a firing party and buglers performed the last military rites of firing three volleys and playing the “Last Post.”

There was a large number of beautiful floral emblems placed on the coffin, which was covered with the Union Jack. Amongst those sending wreaths were the widow and children, Mr. and Mrs. F. Jarvis, Mr. F. Jarvis, Mr. G. Jarvis, Mr. and Mrs. G. Crossland, Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Montgomery, the staff of the Theatre Royal, Mrs. Joliffe, and Mr. Whittaker. Mr. W. Atkinson, a personal friend, officiated in the chapel and at the graveside.

Willie Rhodes

Willie Rhodes

Willie Rhodes, born circa 1885 in Rotherham, is the husband of my first cousin, thrice removed, Hannah Elizabeth Burton.

Willie was a casualty of the Gallipoli Campaign of World War One and below are newspaper entries published after his death.

THE ADVERTISER, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1916.

News has been received of the death of Private Willie Rhodes (York and Lancaster Regiment), of 5, Truro place, Rotherham, who is reported to have been killed in action on September 24th. Working at the Rotherham Main Colliery up to enlistment in May 1915, he served with his battalion in Gallipoli and was an officer’s servant.

RHODES. – In ever loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Willie Rhodes (York and Lancs.), killed in action Sept. 24, 1916.

How little I thought when I said goodbye,
We parted for ever and you were to die,
Oh! the grief that we feel words never can tell,
For we could not be with you to bid you farewell.

Sleep on, dear husband, in a hero’s grave,
A grave I may never see,
But as long as life and memory lasts
We will remember thee.

Charles Emmanuel Easthope

Charles Emmanuel Easthope, born in 1872 in Tipton, Staffordshire, is my third cousin, twice removed and son of Emmanuel Easthope and Emily Webster Burton.

In 1908, in Rotherham, Charles married Susannah Childs and together, they issued four children, who were called, Charles Robert (1908 to 1983), Kathleen (1911 to 1982), George (1917 to 1943) and Edward (1920 to 1979).

EASTHOPE. – On August 4th, at Rotherham Hospital, Charles Emanuel, beloved husband of the late Susannah, aged 77 years.

Reunited.

The family thank doctor and staff of the hospital who attended him and all relatives, friends and neighbours for their kind sympathy and floral tributes during their sad bereavement.

MR. C. E. EASTHOPE

The interment took place on Wednesday in the Masbro’ Cemetery of Mr. Charles E. Easthope, 231, St. Ann’s Road, Rotherham, who died at the Rotherham Hospital yesterday week, aged 77.

A native of Tipton, Staffs., Mr. Easthope retired in 1942 after being employed for 43 years at the Park Gate Works. He was a veteran of the South African War, and served in The York and Lancaster Regiment. Mrs. Easthope died in 1935. He leaves a daughter and two sons. Another son died of wounds in North Africa.

Mona Berry

Mona Berry is my fourth cousin, twice removed and daughter of Frank Berry and Honor Brotherton.

In 1950, Mona married Ernest Burton and together issued one child that died in infancy.

Missing woman found in river

A Rawmarsh woman who went missing from her home has been found dead in the River Don.

The lifeless body of Mona Burton (64) who lived at Hawke Close, Rawmarsh, was spotted in the river at around 8.30 pm near to St Anns Bridge on Monday evening by a man walking his dog.

She had been reported to police as a missing person by her husband earlier that evening.

Firemen from Erskine Road and Oaks Lane Stations recovered the body.

A police spokesman said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mrs Burton’s death.

Francis Burton & Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman

Francis Burton, born in 1881 in Rotherham, is my first cousin, thrice removed and son of Thomas Burton and Sarah Milsom.

In 1906, in All Saints’ Church, Rotherham, Francis married Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman. Together, Francis and Sarah issued four children, who were called, Francis (1906 to 1970), Leonard Ernest (1908 to 1994), Edith (1911 to 2002) and Elizabeth (1915 to 2002).

I found Francis and Sarah’s grave in 2005 in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham. It had been well cared for (presumably by their daughters until their deaths) but is now quite rapidly, and literally, falling apart.

BURTON. – On Sunday, February 18th, 1951, Francis (Skater) Burton, beloved husband of Sarah Ann, of 63, Wellgate, passed away, aged 69 years. Interred, Moorgate Cemetery, Wednesday, February 21st.

Francis & Sarah’s grave

The death occurred last Sunday of Mr. Francis (“Skater”) Burton, of 63, Wellgate, Rotherham. He was 69.

A native of Rotherham, Mr. Burton was employed as a miner for about 30 years at the Rotherham Main Colliery, and then at the Rotherham Gas Works for about 13 years.

Jennie Jarvis

Jennie Jarvis, born in 1882 in Rotherham, is my second cousin, twice removed and daughter of Eliza Jane Bowler Crossland and Frank Jarvis.

In 1901, Jennie married Frank Souter Wilson. On the 1901 Census, prior to their marriage, Frank was lodging with Jennie’s grandmother, Elizabeth Crossland (nee Burton). However, on the 1911 Census, there is no trace of Frank Wilson but Jennie is a ‘House Keeper’ in the home of Edwin Barron. In 1926, Jennie and Edwin married in Rotherham.

Jennie issued children with both Frank and Edwin, who were called, Marjory Wilson, Edna Wilson, Edwin Barron and Peter Baron.

I suspect that Frank Wilson deserted Jennie which would explain why many years passed before Jennie was able to marry Edwin.

The death occurred on Thursday at her home, 72, Wickersley Road, Rotherham, of Mrs. Jenny Barron, aged 67, wife of Mr. Edwin Barron, managing director of Messrs. Edwin Barron and Sons, Ltd., iron and steel merchants, Don Street, Rotherham.

For many years Mrs. Barron worked actively for the Rotherham Town Cricket Club for whom she organised whist drives to raise funds, and she also assisted with refreshments. She was on the Ladies’ Committee of the Club, and was also a member of the Ladies’ Section of the Rotherham Conservative and Unionist Association. For a number of years she was a street group secretary for National Savings. She leaves a widower, two sons and a daughter.

The interment will be on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Moorgate Cemetery.

BARRON. – On January 27th at 72, Wickersley Road, Jenney, aged 67, the beloved wife of Edwin Barron.

Thomas Burton & Ann Pickersgill

Thomas Burton and Ann Pickersgill are my third great grandparents, marrying in 1838 in Saint Mary’s Church, Worsbrough, Barnsley.

Ann was born in 1819 in Greasbrough to parents, Joseph Pickersgill and Elizabeth Ditch.

I’d known since 2004 that Thomas was born circa 1817 in Bentley, Doncaster but I was unable to find a baptism for him, despite searching in Doncaster Archives. His father, John Burton, is named on his marriage certificate but this only confused matters as the closest match that I could find was a Thomas Burden born to a John Burden in Bentley. There was a John Burton in Bentley, but no corresponding baptism for Thomas. Fortunately, Ancestry DNA came to my rescue and conclusively proved that Thomas is the son of John Burton, but why he wasn’t baptised is a mystery.

Quarry Hill

Thomas and Ann lived in Wombwell for a number of years, before moving to Rotherham in the 1840s, living on Westgate and Old Holland before settling on Quarry Hill, Wellgate in the 1860s. Quarry Hill was occupied by the Burton family well into the 20th century, but the houses on there were cleared many years ago.

Thomas and Ann issued four children, who were called, Elizabeth (circa 1840 to 1905), Mary (circa 1848 to 1920), Thomas (1850 to 1924) and Joseph (1853 to 1922). Remarkably, my nan, Violet Burton (1915 to 2013), could remember her grandfather, Joseph, who she described as ‘short and stiff’ and used to smoke a pipe on a bench at the bottom of the street that she lived on as a child.

Thomas and Ann are buried in separate unmarked graves in Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham. Below are their obituaries.

ROTHERHAM AND MASBRO’ ADVERTISER, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 1877.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT ROTHERHAM. – On Wednesday afternoon an inquest was held before Mr. Dossey Wrightman, coroner, at the Cleaver Inn, Wellgate, Rotherham, on the body of Ann Burton who died in consequences of falling downstairs on Saturday night. The deceased was the wife of Thomas Burton, a labourer, of Wellgate, and was 58 years of age. On Saturday she had gone to bed about ten o’clock along with her husband, and about midnight she got up to fetch some water from downstairs. In doing so she fell from the top of the stairs to the bottom inflicting a large wound on her forehead, and another at the back of her head. The back of her neck and her shoulders were also severely bruised. Her husband and two sons picked her up and carried her to bed again. Dr. Foote’s assistant was called in on Monday and attended her until her death which took place at noon on Tuesday. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased had been accidentally killed by a fall downstairs.

Leonard Ernest Burton, born in 1908 in Rotherham, is my second cousin, twice removed and son of Francis Burton and Sarah Ann Hudson Sturman.

In 1934, Leonard married Dorothy Ivy Hudson and together, they issued two children, called, Alan and Peter.

Mrs. Dorothy Ivy Burton, of 71, Watson Road, Kimberworth, Rotherham, died at the Moorgate General Hospital recently, aged 49.

Born in Rotherham, Mrs. Burton was employed as a meter tester by Messrs. Guest and Chrimes Ltd., for several years. She was a regular member of the congregation at St. John’s Church, Kimberworth Park.

Mrs. Burton leaves a widower and one son. Her husband, Mr. L. E. Burton, is employed as a bar mill foreman by Steel, Peech and Tozer.

A funeral service followed by interment took place at St. Thomas’ Church, Kimberworth, last Saturday, the Rev. B. W. Newth officiating. The mourners included Mr. L. E. Burton (widower), Mr. P.
